Acknowledgments

First and foremost, my heartfelt thanks to the brilliant designers without whom this book would merely be an unanchored collection of Dungeons & Dragons lore. The creative vision and unbridled enthusiasm that Sharon, Alysia, Rebecca, and Lydia brought to this project was a joy to experience.

My gratitude to the entire Ten Speed Press team, who brought their considerable talents to bear on this project; it's been an honor to collaborate with so many wonderful folks. Editors Claire Yee and Zoey Brandt offered expert guidance that kept the complex process rolling smoothly. Diana Drew was vital in fine-tuning my initial draft, while BJ Berti ensured the accuracy of each pattern. Betsy Stromberg developed the book's gorgeous visuals, with the added contributions of Claudia Sanchez, Abby Oladipo, and Dan Myers. Mithy Evans and the photography team, including lighting assistant Sara Bluwulf, stylist Jillian Knox, and models Claudia Sanchez, Jermaine Dante, Avery Noonan, and Erin Marshall, brought real magic to every page. Huge thanks as well to Shaida Boroumand for shepherding both this and the Dungeons & Dragons Young Adventurer's Guides from concept to launch.

On a personal note, I'd like to thank my parents for supporting the two interests—role-playing games and textile arts—that combined into this book. My dad took me to my first Dungeons & Dragons games, always encouraging my interest in fantasy and science fiction. My mom taught me to sew and was a constant source of inspiration through her quilting, needlework, and costuming projects. Their support means the world to me.

Finally, thanks to my husband, Jim Zub, for his support, and to Tory Woollcott for the steady supply of funny videos that were a crucial part of my writing process.

About the Contributors

  • Stacy King

is a professional nerd who has built a career out of introducing new people to her favorite obsessions. She is the coauthor of the Dungeons & Dragons Young Adventurer's Guide series, distilling the lore and concepts of the iconic roleplaying game for young readers. Her graphic novel work includes the Manga Classics series, which adapt Western literary classics like Pride and Prejudice and Dracula. Along with writing, she is fascinated by textile arts such as cross-stitch, needlework, sewing, and historical attire. She lives in downtown Toronto with her husband, comics author Jim Zub, and far too many dice.

  • Sharon Posey

is based in Pensacola, Florida. She first learned crochet at the feet of her now-mother-in-law when she was just sixteen. After she and her husband had a son in 2004, she started learning how to make amigurumi. Her first one was terrible! But over time, she got better and decided she wanted to write her own patterns. She started simple and worked her way up to detailed designs. Now, Sharon and her husband run Posey Handmade together.

  • Alysia Sly

is a fiber artist based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She started crocheting around age nine in the early 2000s, thanks to lessons from her aunt and grandma, and some of her first projects were dresses for her dolls. During college, she revived her love of crochet when she discovered amigurumi, and she's been crocheting nonstop ever since. She opened her online shop, Co-op Creations SD, in late 2021. When she's not crocheting, she loves spending time with her husband, Josh, and their two cats, Ajani and Tami.

  • Rebecca Stone

is a social scientist and fiber artist born in Sydney, Australia, and now based in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. She started crocheting in January 2021 as an alternative to doomscrolling and quickly fell in love with fantasy-inspired amigurumi. She now owns BextraOrdinary Creatures, where she enjoys designing fantasy crochet patterns and making eyes, horns, and other accessories to bring her creations to life. In addition to crochet, Rebecca loves spending time with her partner, Jason, and their two sons, Cameron and Caleb, who are excellent creative collaborators.

  • Lydia Viatoris

is a teacher, artist, and designer living in Jacksonville, Florida. She first learned how to crochet from her high school math teacher as a way to pass the time after exams, and she has continued to pursue fiber arts ever since. Lydia has a career teaching high school natural sciences and has completed a masters degree in biology. She has been applying the scientific method of hypothesis and experimentation to her crochet work, creating patterns under the name EarthTricks since 2014. She has a great love of learning, trying new things, and general tomfoolery in the creative realm.
